Storm Ciara updates: Tree falls on A1M and homes suffer power cuts as high winds batter Peterborough and surrounding areas

More than a dozen homes have suffered a power cut in Market Deeping this morning, according to Western Power Distribution, while there is currently a power cut in the Whittlesey area.
UK Power Networks said: “Our engineers are working hard to fix it as quickly as possible. We are sorry for any trouble this may have caused you.”

In Peterborough, local football matches have been called off, while non-league side Wisbech Town had a stand at their Fenland Stadium collapse.

Hide AdFounder of Peterborough Weather Watch Trev Robbins-Pratt said a 66mph gust has been recorded in Wittering.


Gusts of up to 70mph are expected today with an amber weather warning in place from 8am to 9pm.
Trees have also fallen at the Showground, in Silverwod Road, Millfield, and on a power line in Bridgehill Road, Newborough. The latter is said to be closed with police at the scene.
There is huge disruption on the rail lines, with a heavily reduced service running between Peterborough and London and passengers urged not to travel unless it is essential.

Hide AdHighways England in the East of England tweeted: “We’re receiving lots of reports of debris in the carriageway across the region due to the high winds from #StormCiara - please take extra care if you’re travelling.”


Lincolnshire Police’s Force Control Room tweeted: “We are receiving a very high volume of calls today due to storm Ciara. Our Call Takers are working extremely hard to take your call for service as soon as they possibly can. We apologise for any delay #pleasebekind #StormCiara.”
