Stamford Georgian Festival underway

With a dry and sunny weather forecast, thousands of people are expected at the spectacular bull run, which starts at 6pm tonight (Saturday, September 26). The procession will start in Star Lane and will wind its way via Broad Street, Ironmonger Street, High Street, Maiden Lane and into St Mary’s Street. In St Mary’s Place the bull will be ‘corralled’ at around 7.30pm before the action moves to The Meadows for what promises to be an amazing finale, featuring samba bans, militiamen, pyrotechnics and fire towers.

The festival was last held in 2013 and attracted in the region of 20,000 people and similar numbers are expected again.

Ahead of the bull run, there is a street market on Broad Street, Stamford, and entertainment on The Meadows including members of the Coldstream Regiment of Footguards. There is also omnibus carriage rides and mail coach rides making their way through Stamford, adding to the atmosphere.

There’s also a selection of shows in the grounds of Browne’s Hospital to choose from and tours of Stamford Town Hall every hour, for which tickets are free but must be obtained from the box office.

The festival kicked off in style last night with a period costume ball held in the ballroom at Stamford Arts Centre and a talk by Dr Lucy Worsley.
