Skeletal remains uncovered at Stamford Hospital

Polly Grimmett, Stamford Hospital redevelopment project director, said: “The dig was carried out by members of Cambridge University Archaeological Unit, who will submit their formal report to Heritage Lincolnshire in the coming weeks.

“Initial feedback from the archaeological team has suggested that the bodies may date back to the time that the Friary was active on site, and as the bodies were mainly laid side by side, in rows, it suggests that the dig may have found the old cemetery. The remains were not excavated and were instead covered back over and their location has been clearly mapped.”

Heritage Lincolnshire will use the final report to set out its recommendations to the local planning authority about any future developments on site. Planners will then be able to advise the trust on the next steps regarding a future application to create a procedure room facility on the hospital site.

Polly added: “Meanwhile, we are getting on with finalising plans to redevelop the East end of the site, which includes all outpatient clinic areas and the Minor Injuries Unit. We hope to appoint contractors before Christmas.”
