Pupils go on a hunt for treasure

The pupils turned pirates used their newly gained knowledge of co-ordinates to plot their route on a pirates’ treasure map, setting off in search of the treasure chest which was hidden somewhere at Stibbington Lakes Nature Reserve.

This was the first day of a three-day residential course for those in Year 4 at Hampton Hargate. The programme was chosen by the teachers to help support their classroom work in geography, along with a number of other subjects.

On day two they turned into Vikings for the day, learning about Viking lifestyles, crafts and storytelling - helping to support their history topic.

Followed by the final day when they turned their attention to science and spent the morning investigating the properties of rocks, using rock sets, microscopes and ID cards, along with the chance to explore a geological time tunnel.

Lead teacher, Tracy Pink said: “The programme that we chose for our residential experience at Stibbington is great for enhancing our curriculum, but it also gives the children an opportunity to develop their social skills, co-operation, teamwork and independence.”

Stibbington Centre’s headteacher, Rosie Edwards explains: “Most Primary Schools in the Peterborough area bring their children on educational visits to Stibbington. Some, like Hampton Hargate, take advantage of the opportunity to offer a residential experience. Whatever the subject and whatever the age, a Stibbington experience is guaranteed to bring learning to life in a way that children are sure to remember.”
