Peterborough MP urges Government to take action on unlawful traveller camps

Peterborough MP Paul Bristow has welcomed news the Government will bring forward new legislation to prevent unlawful traveller encampments.

Mr Bristow told the House of Commons city residents “have had to endure unauthorised encampment on public land for many years”.

He said: “They have left behind rubbish, industrial waste and even human waste, costing many thousands of pounds to clear up.

“Will (Home Secretary Priti Patel) agree that this is unacceptable and will she bring forward legislation to deal with this as soon as possible?”

Ms Patel replied: “I think (Mr Bristow) knows my views on this subject matter quite well having campaigned with him.

“I absolutely agree with him that it is thoroughly unacceptable and he will have to wait until the Autumn session of Parliament but we will be bringing forward legislation covering this very issue.”
