The Lib Dems have been pushing newsletters through letterboxes in Paston and Walton where the party holds all three seats on the city council.

The Peterborough Telegraph contacted the Lib Dems after hearing from a resident who was concerned about receiving the materials, with people across the country asked to only make essential journeys at this time.

In response, the party said: “Liberal Democrat councillors in Peterborough have a proud track record of keeping in touch with their communities all year round.

“For many residents their regular local Lib Dem newsletter is how they access important information about their area. This includes how to contact their local elected representatives so they can be assisted in getting the help that they need.

“Now more so than ever in a time where residents are feeling more and more isolated it is important that residents don’t feel abandoned by their local councillors as well. This is even more important for those residents without access to the internet for whom this may be their only source of help.

“Most of our leaflets are delivered by our councillors and other volunteers. Current Government regulations permit volunteering provided it is done safely, near to home and not in groups.

“The World Health Organization has concluded that there is very little risk of spreading the virus on paper. Distribution of mail by post, delivery of parcels and online shopping, and home delivery of daily newspapers, continues.

“We are keeping our volunteers informed through a range of internal communications and local support.

“In line with continued health and government guidance we continue to advise our deliverers that good hand hygiene is the first and most important line of defence. This includes promoting regular hand washing with soap and water, use of hand sanitiser, disposable gloves and face coverings.

“Our volunteers will also look to maintain two metre social distance with people they meet whilst out delivering.”

Other parties have stopped delivering newsletters during the current lockdown.

Conservative MP for Peterborough Paul Bristow said: “People don’t need politics in a pandemic. The message is clear - stay at home. It’s typical of the Liberal Democrats — they are always so sanctimonious, but look who’s potentially spreading the virus.

“This activity is unnecessary and needs to stop. The serious parties aren’t leafleting in a lockdown. Nor should the Lib Dems.”
