Late night demolition works at Northminster car park criticised

Late night demolition works at Northminster will not be repeated, according to Peterborough City Council, after criticism over the noise being made.

Canon Ian Black from St John’s church in Cathedral Square tweeted last weekend: “11.30pm on a Saturday night and the demolition of the market car park is still in full swing. Loud heavy plant in action. Sound travelling into the Cathedral Precincts. This is not appropriate.” He added that the works to demolish the car park carried on into Sunday morning. After being contacted by the Peterborough Telegraph about why works were taking place so late in the evening, a council spokesperson said: “The deconstruction of Northminster car park is continuing as planned for the time being in accordance with government guidance to ensure all work is carried out safely with workforces practising social distancing. On Saturday night work was carried out later into the evening than usual to reduce longer term disruption in the area. This was a one-off activity and is not due to be repeated in the work programme, with crews operating to normal daytime hours.” The demolition of the multi-storey - which is said to have reached the end of its life - began in March is due to be completed in the summer. The city centre site is then due to be redeveloped in the future, with potential plans including apartments, a replacement car park and a new market hall.
