Government approval last step before some Peterborough landlords charged for licences

Government approval is the last step before landlords in parts of Peterborough are forced to apply for licences.

On Monday, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet agreed to selective licensing, affecting landlords who own around 37 per cent of the city’s private rented stock.

Landlords who are accredited members of a nationally accredited landlord/letting agent association will pay £50 per property for a five-year licence. That fee rises to £600 for non-accredited landlords.

The wards affected are: Central, North, East, Park, Fletton, Bretton North, Stanground Central, Walton and Orton Longueville.

Cabinet member Councillor Peter Hiller said: “If approved by the Secretary of State, selective licensing will have a positive impact across Peterborough as well as increasing prosecutions against landlords who allow tenants to live in unsafe, unclean and overcrowded properties.”
