Unanimous support for council motion to crackdown on vehicles abandoned on Peterborough streets

A motion calling for a crackdown on vehicles being abandoned on the city’s street has received unanimous support from Peterborough City Council.

Council Leader Shabina Qayyum put forward a motion at last week's (October 14) full council meeting to call for a multi-agency enforcement programme to deal with issues regarding vehicles being parked on roads and estates without valid MOT certificates, insurance, road tax or in an abandoned condition.

Cllr Qayyum described such abandoned vehicles as “a visual blight in neighbourhoods."

The motion called for relevant council personnel to work with Cambridgeshire Constabulary, the DVLA, and the Motor Insurers' Bureau to establish a coordinated local approach to tackling uninsured, untaxed and non-MOT vehicles.

Often action can be delayed as it is not always clear to residents which organisation is responsible for dealing with a particular issue.

The motion also called for periodic multi-agency enforcement days in hotspot locations across across the city as well as improving and improving communication of how these can be reported and checked.

The motion received unanimous support across the chamber following a short debate.

Speaking in support of her motion, Cllr Qayyum said: “We have all been plagued with cars that don’t have valid MOTs and insurance and parking spaces taken up by vehicles that have no right to be there.

"We need to work on a multi-disciplinary basis to identify hotspots and enhance enforcement.”

As a result of the vote, a report on the action taken for this project is to be presented within the next 12 months.
