Peterborough City Council officers opposed the proposed extension of the terraced two-storey dwelling at 85 Outfield, Bretton, but were unanimously overruled by members of the authority’s planning committee on Tuesday.

The application was for the erection of a single storey side using land which is currently part of the adjacent public open space.

The applicant is currently in the process of trying to buy a rectangular piece of land measuring approximately 5.5m in width by 16.5m in length from the council to accommodate the proposal.

The extension, if built, will be 4.5m in width, but 5.5m of the open space would be required to enable a 1m pathway to be provided to the side.

The extension will provide a ground floor en-suite bedroom, utility room and playroom.

Planning officers had recommended that the application be refused for three reasons: the loss of public open space, an “unacceptable impact on the character and appearance of the site and surrounding area,” and the impact on an existing tree.
