VIDEO: Duchess of Cornwall visits Peterborough to celebrate literacy

Camilla Parker Bowles, wife of Prince Charles, was in the city in her role as patron of the National Literacy Trust.

She began her visit at Peterborough Cathedral alongside over 300 children which started with local author Guy Bass reading the poem ‘Nightmare pigs in 3D.’

Her Royal Highness then presented certificates to winners of a creative writing competition called Our Stories: Celebrating Peterborough’s Cultural Diversity.

First prize was for ‘The Basant Festival’ by Ali Ejaz Abbas, aged 11, who goes to St Thomas More Primary School.

Second prize was for ‘The Hen and the Golden Eggs’ by Kissya Da Silva, aged 10, who goes to Beeches Primary School.

And third prize was awarded for ‘St Lucia Day’ by Ladislav Makula, aged 10, who goes to Abbotsmede Primary School.

The top three all got to read out their entries in front of the Duchess.

Onlookers also waited outside the cathedral as they attempted to catch a glimpse of the royal.

The rest of Camilla’s time in Peterborough will see her visit Boots Opticians and join partners, funders, volunteers and families at a reception hosted at the Town Hall to hear success stories involving Peterborough’s position as one of three National Literacy Trust Hubs.
