VE Day: Peterborough celebrates 75th anniversary despite coronavirus lockdown

The coronavirus lockdown could not prevent people in from celebrating 75 years since victory in Europe during the Second World War.

Bunting was hoisted on city streets, 1940s’ costumes were worn and songs sung to mark the occasion, with villagers in Helpston and Etton even able to see a restored amphibious vehicle (DUKW) from the war pass through the streets.

The parties began after a two minute silence was held at 11am, while wreaths were laid at All Saints church in Park Road.

At 9pm this evening the Queen will address the nation.

Among the places to commemorate the occasion in style - despite the social distancing restrictions - were Everingham in Orton Brimbles, Spencer Avenue in Stanground and Newcastle Drive in Orton Longueville.

Peterborough Cathedral also held a virtual service at 3pm for people to watch from their homes.

The service was led by the Dean Christopher Dalliston and Canon Ian Black, the Vicar of Peterborough.
