Union leaders voice concern for Peterborough shop staff as Sainsbury's looks to sell Argos

Union leaders have voiced concern for the future of staff in Peterborough after supermarket giant Sainsbury’s announced it is to sell Argos.

Officials at the shop workers’ union Usdaw say they have concerns over staff jobs, terms and conditions after the £120 million sale plans were revealed.

Sainsbury’s operates two Argos stores in Peterborough at its stores in Oxney Road and at the Bretton Centre.

The supermarket operator announced that it is to sell Argos under a ‘business as usual’ deal in a move that will allow the company to concentrate on its core grocery business.

It says the sale to Swift Partners will not mean ant change for staff and customers.

But a spokesperson for Usdaw said: “We recognise this announcement will create uncertainty for those affected, and we will provide support, advice and representation throughout the process.

"Our focus will be on protecting our members' jobs, terms and conditions and minimising disruption wherever possible.

"Swift has a good track record of engagement with Usdaw and we welcome the commitment to keeping the model of store in stores, standalone stores and Local Fulfilment Centres and that any changes will be handled fairly, transparently and in consultation with employees and their union representatives.

The spokesperson added: “We will continue to engage with Sainsbury’s and Swift over the coming weeks as more details become available.

"Our members remain our priority.”
