Tributes paid to long-serving Market Deeping councillor Reg Howard

Reg Howard, 93, of Kesteven Drive, Market Deeping, passed away yesterday (Tuesday). He was involved in a crash on the A15 south of Bourne just after midday on Monday.

He was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham but later died.

Reg was a popular Market Deeping town and South Kesteven district councillor. He was serving chairman of the district council and was standing for re-election next month.

Mayor of Market Deeping Roy Stephenson paid tribute to his colleague. He said: “Reg had been Mayor of Market Deeping many times and will be remembered for his sterling contribution to the civic life of the town.

“Reg was particularly involved as mayor in leading the fight to retain the Glebe field for the use of the public rather than allow it to be developed privately. He rarely missed town council meetings and has for some years been regarded as a fount of knowledge in the town’s relationship with South Kesteven District Council where he was also an elected member.

“He was always determined to put the town’s case and to protect it from unwanted changes imposed by the larger councils. His efforts and large personality will be greatly missed by all.”

Reg was a Market Deeping town councillor for 31 years and was mayor 13 times between 1987 and 2013. He served on the district council for 24 years as an independent member.

South Kesteven District Council leader Linda Neal (Con), who is stepping down after this year’s elections, also paid tribute. She said: “It’s a really sad loss, particularly as he was coming towards the end of his year as chairman.

“Reg was completely dedicated to serving the community in the Deepings and representing them as best he could.

“He will be a sad loss.”
