The political make up of Peterborough City Council after Thursday's by-election - and how it has changed in 2026
The Green Party in Peterborough were celebrating in the early hours of the morning after claiming by-election success in Fletton & Woodston.
Katherine Sharp was the successful candidate in Thursday’s by-election in the Fletton and Woodston ward.
Cllr Sharp won the seat after the resignation of Daisy Blakemore-Creedon earlier this year.
This year there has been quite a change in the political make-up of the city council, following a by-election in the same ward in February, and 18 seats across the city being up for election in May.

Since the beginning of December 2025, there has been the sad loss of two Labour councillors in the Fletton and Woodston ward – Nick Thulbourn and Alan Dowson, as well as the resignation of Ms Blakemore-Creedon.
There have also been councillors changing parties in the last eight months.
In December 2025, the make up of Peterborough City Council was as follows.
Labour: 15 councillors
Independent 11 councillors
Conservative: 10 councillors
Peterborough First: 10 councillors
Liberal Democrat: 8 councillors
Green Party: 5 councillors
Not specified: 1 councillor
Following the by-election on Thursday night, the make up of the city council is as follows:
Conservative: 13 councillors
Labour (and Co-operative): 11 councillors
Liberal Democrat: 8 councillors
Peterborough First: 8 councillors
Independent: 8 councillors
Green Party: 7 councillors
Reform UK: 5 councillors
Despite not having the most councillors, Labour’s Shabina Qayyum is the leader of the authority, due to a coalition being formed with other parties.
