Re-opening of Peterborough Lido not ruled out by city council

Peterborough City Council has not ruled out opening the Lido this year, a week after government rules on opening outdoor swimming pools were relaxed.

The historic pool is run by Vivacity, but the charity is in the process of handing services back to the city council.

Speaking to The Peterborough Telegraph earlier this month, Vivacity chairman Stewart Francis said it would take a lot of work to get the pool in a state fit to open, more staff than normal would need to be employed, and capacity would be cut by two thirds to keep people safe.Photographs have shown the pool is currently filled with water that has been turned green thanks to algae. It could take up to three weeks to empty and re-fill it.

Mr Francis said Vivacity would be happy to re-open the pool this year, but the council would have to fund the entire re-opening.

He added that in a normal, busy summer, the pool operates at a loss.

When asked if Peterborough City Council had ruled out opening the Lido this year, a council spokesman said; “We remain in discussions with Vivacity regarding the Lido and plan to make an announcement shortly.”

There have currently been no announcements on when other gyms, swimming pools and other sports facilities run by Vivacity will re-open.
