RAF Wittering colleagues pay tribute to ‘exceptionally popular’ senior aircraftman

David Kenwright’s body was discovered in Stamford on Monday after he had gone missing on Saturday evening in the town.

Lincolnshire Police, which was searching for the 34-year-old in Water Street, has since stated that his death is “unexplained” and that a file has been sent to the coroner.

Following the confirmation of his death, friends of the aircraftman and local footballer have paid emotional tributes to him.

Group Captain Jo Lincoln, station commander at RAF Wittering, said: “The thoughts of everyone at RAF Wittering are with SAC Kenwright’s family and friends. It is an absolute tragedy that a life with such promise has been taken so soon and all of us are shocked by this sad news.

“He was an exceptionally popular and well-liked member of the station and coming to terms with this terrible loss will not be easy for his loved ones or friends.”

Squadron Leader Tony O’Neill, officer commanding No 1 expeditionary logistics squadron, said: “The thoughts of everyone at 1 EL Squadron are with SAC Kenwright’s family and friends.

“We knew him as Dave or Kennie and he had an infectious and endearing enthusiasm for life that extended beyond the Royal Air Force and into the local community. He was a vital part of our squadron family and he will be missed by all of us.”

Flight Sergeant Lee Tippett, a friend and colleague, said: “Nobody will forget Dave, his personality, his walk and his infectious laugh. Dave’s departure has left so many hearts broken.

“At work, and on the football field, proudly wearing his No 12 jersey for the local village team, he will be sadly missed. All our thoughts are with his loving family, Tanya and the girls. We have lost a remarkable man, rest in peace mate.”

An RAF Wittering spokesperson added: “The death of Senior Aircraftman David Kenwright has been met with great sadness at RAF Wittering. With his inborn sense of compassion, lively humour and boundless energy, SAC Kenwright had made many friends across the Royal Air Force.

“At work, SAC Kenwright was known for his professionalism and strong sense of comradeship. Outside of work he supported numerous good causes and was an active member of the Wittering village football team, typically wearing the No 12 jersey.”
