Praise for Sawtry engineers who have been protecting the community

The Spirotech Group, based at the Brookside Industrial Estate, in Glatton Road, has been putting its top flight engineers to work making an array of Perspex screens for local shops and businesses.

The screens offer vital protection for staff and customers from the the spread of the corona virus and were often the key factor in whether shops and other business could continue to trade during the lockdown.

It is a far cry from the work that usually occupies the engineers who work on complex contracts from companies across the globe.

The company is also involved in a major project connected to the Hinckley Point C Power station, in Somerset, and which is expected to help create new jobs.

Praise for the company came during a visit to the factory by North West Cambridgeshire MP Shailesh Vara and Councillor Simon Bywater who visited to thank the firm for stepping in to help the community during the health crisis.

During a tour of the premises given by director Russell Gadsby, the two politicians also saw the many changes made in the factory to comply with Covid-19 safety and social distancing measures.

Afterwards, Mr Vara said: “I was very pleased to visit Spirotech again and to personally thank them for all the work they have done with the supply of screens to local businesses.

“It is great to see the community coming together and supporting each other at such a challenging time.

“I was also very pleased to see that the company continues to do well, both in the domestic and overseas market.

“It is particularly good to see that major global companies are turning to Spirotech when placing orders for some of the products that they need.”

Cllr Bywater said: “Spirotech haso been really supportive in our local community by fitting Perspex screens in Sawtry shops to keep everyone safe during this Covid crisis.

“We are all very grateful.”

Mr Gadsby said: “It was a pleasure for Spirotech Group to welcome Shailesh Vara MP and Cllr Simon Bywater to our factory.

“This gave our team an opportunity to showcase some of the many projects we manufacture, both here in the UK and also to our overseas customers.

“I was delighted to be able to share with them some of the details of our latest special project - Hinckley Point C Power station and the additional employment opportunities this project will bring to Cambridgeshire.

“I also discussed with them Spirotech’s aspiration to further increase our apprenticeship programme, offering further opportunity for young people into the manufacturing industry.”
