Praise for Peterborough Black Lives Matter protest

Peterborough residents who took part in a Black Lives Matter protest at the weekend have been praised after the event passed peacefully.

While some protests across the country were marred by violence, with dozens of arrests made in London, in Peterborough, scores of people gathered in Cathedral Square for a peaceful protest.

The protesters were also praised for their social distancing, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “Protests were peaceful with those attending trying to comply with social distancing. No arrests were made and there was no need for enforcement.”

A Peterborough City Council spokeswoman said; “We are aware from the protest this weekend in Peterborough that most people observed social distancing.

“Whilst it is not sensible to gather in numbers such as these an attempt by the majority of the protesters was made to observe social distancing and the majority wore face masks

“We can be proud as a city that the protest was peaceful and consideration was given to being alert and staying safe.”
