Popular Peterborough carnival postponed with hopes of new date later in the year

The annual Werrington Scout and Guide Carnival - which takes over the village for a day every June - has inevitably been postponed, but not cancelled.

The carnival, spread across the fields at Werrington School in Amberley Slope, always proves a huge draw, and the parade which precedes it brings hundreds of people out of their homes, lining the streets and filling the pubs.

The carnival - a big fund-raiser for local Scouts and Guides - was due to take place this year on June 27, but carnival chairman Paul Smedley shared a message on social media: “As I am sure you are all aware, COVID-19 is causing a lot of events to postpone/ cancel. Obviously we want to take every precaution to protect the public and our team - it has been a difficult decision to make but unfortunately between the Werrington Scout & Guide Council and myself we have decided to postpone this year’s carnival.”

But Mr Smedley was keen to point out that all was not lost, adding: “We will endeavour to get the carnival rescheduled for later on in the year, so will hopefully see you all at the carnival later on in the year.”
