Street representatives delivered the blank pieces of bunting door to door with a note encouraging residents to take part. Leaving a few days in between, the bunting was returned with wonderful heart-felt designs.

With more than 350 paper pieces already completed, and still several streets worth to come in, the village is set to be full of colour and celebration.

One bunting from C&J Choat in Reedmace Close read: “Life sometimes throws us the unexpected, but we have to pick up the pieces to make it work, for love and kindness of good neighbours. No matter what we’ve been through, we give you all our thanks.”

Wendy Sayer, who organised the bunting collection, was amazed at the community spirit. She said: “It was just an idea I had to involve the whole community, young and old. I was hoping to involve as many people that I could. I was hoping it would encourage people to draw, paint or simply write a message of hope or thanks during this period. The response has been incredible.”

The village, which is built in a cross shape, is planning on hanging the bunting along the main streets so everyone can see them and read their messages.

The 75th anniversary of VE Day, which marks the Allied forces victory in Europe during the Second World War, is on Friday.
