Peterborough salon to host tutorial for parents on how to do children’s hair

After Prince William admitted last year he had to watch YouTube tutorials to style his four-year-old daughter Charlotte’s hair, local hairdressers Emma Gilder and Katy Stafford quizzed their clients to see if anyone else struggled.

The pair were shocked to learn just how many people were unable to do the basics.

Emma and Katy, who co-own the Symmetry Hair Salon located at the Marriott Hotel, Lynch Wood, in Peterborough, have decided to do something to help parents create the perfect ponytail and plait.

“Going to school with neat hair might seem like a small thing, but feeling smart and ready is really important to get in the right mindset to face the day,” Emma said.

“And the time spent doing your child’s hair can be a really important for bonding. Of course it’s usually done in a hurry but it doesn’t need to be difficult, if you know a few tricks of the trade.

“We’ve spent a year chatting to clients about this and both mums and dads are struggling. So we’ve decided to do something to help.”

To help mums and dads, Emma and Katy are closing the salon early and running an event at 4.30pm on Monday, March 2 which parents can attend with their child to learn how to do the perfect French plait.

There will be a £10 charge to cover the cost of equipment which will be provided and parents can take home with them. There is limited availability, so parents will need to call 01733 371777 to book.

Ahead of the event, Emma and Katy have provided three quick tips for parents to make hair more manageable before it comes to styling:

1. Use a leave in conditioner after shampooing the hair. This will help to moisturise the hair and make it a lot easier to comb through.

2. Use a wide toothcomb on wet hair rather than a brush to get rid of knots. This will prevent breakage to the hair.

3. The best way to get rid of knots on wet hair is to section the hair in half, and always start combing the hair from the ends up to the root.
