Peterborough remembers victims of the Holocaust

The millions murdered in genocides across the world, including the Holocaust, were remembered in a moving service in Peterborough city centre.

A service was held at St John's Church today, as people across the world commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day. The service started with St John Fisher pupils performing a piece of drama in Cathedral Square. There were then a number of speeches, from people of a variety of faiths and religions, before Mayor Cllr Gul Nawaz laid a wreath at the Holocaust Memorial in St John's Square. Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated worldwide on January 27 and for a number of years Peterborough has held its own commemoration as a public and inter-faith act of remembrance. The memorial day remembers the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust and the millions involved in genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo and Darfur. January 27 marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
