National Lottery Winners’ Advisor, Kathy Garrett, who has worked with several winners across the city, has given her top ten tips for if you happen to be the lucky winner.

1. Don’t Rush - You didn’t have the money yesterday. There is rarely anything that needs doing now so take some time to plan and dream. Allow yourself some time to get used to the fact that you have won a substantial amount of money. People hope and dream that they can win the National Lottery and sometimes even talk about what they will do when they win but these ideas often change once it actually happens.

2. Take a holiday - If feasible and travel restrictions allow, we encourage winners to take a break. It doesn’t have to be the holiday of a lifetime, there is plenty of time (and money for that), just have a few days away to let it sink in.

3. Treat yourself - Buy yourself something that, within the size of your win, is small but you wouldn’t have justified buying previously. It could be a handbag, a pair of shoes or a flashy new television. This can often help to make the win feel more real.

4. Take advice from legal and financial professionals - Surround yourself with a good team of professional people that you trust to help with managing your affairs. Ensure your legal affairs are in order and do some financial planning. It is never nice to think about what will happen to your money when you are no longer around, but wills and powers of attorney are really important documents to have. You should also listen to advice around gifting, inheritance tax and trusts.

5. Giving - Once you have taken advice, if you are going to give gifts, talk to the recipients first. What do you want the gift to achieve? How do they feel about that? Try not to get fixated on an amount.

6. Look after yourself - Winning The National Lottery is a huge shock, take good care of your well-being. Eat well, exercise and make sure you have plenty of rest and sleep.

7. Establish your purpose - You’ve won a life-changing amount of money, but what’s your purpose? What are your aims now? If you struggle with this we have people who can help.

8. Talk to other lottery winners - You are in a unique club now, other members of the same club are the best possible source of advice. They will know how you felt, and it’s great to exchange stories with them. We offer the opportunity for publicity and non-publicity winners to meet each other at various occasions.

9. Keep in contact with your Winners Advisor - At Camelot, we pride ourselves on the ongoing support we provide to people going through this amazing experience. We will be there every step of the way to guide you and introduce you to all the experts who can help, from private bankers, solicitors, financial planners, a life coach and even a luxury concierge company.

10. Celebrate it! In whatever way suits you, mark the occasion and make sure you create memories. The story of your lottery win will be passed down through generations as a family legend! Make sure you record it with photos, diaries and keepsakes.

She said: “I’ve greeted more than 2,000 winners since I started working with Camelot in 2010

and to see a father walk into a room and tell his son they’ve won The National Lottery is a privilege that not many people have.

“My favourite moment is when a winner feels happy enough for their Winners’ Advisor to step back – even though it really brings a lump to my throat. It’s like a

child leaving home.”
