Peterborough Gurdwara donates over 100 meals to the homeless

Worshippers at a Gurdwara in Peterborough have prepared and donated over 100 meals to residents of nearby hostels.

The meals were freshly prepared on site at Gurdwara Baba Budha Sahib Ji on Royce Road on Friday and delivered to four locations by a team of eight volunteers.

The food was prepared was part of the Guru Nanak free kitchen, also known as langar, in which food is prepared and can be enjoyed by anyone in the community regardless of age, gender, religion, or social status.

Activities at the temple have been limited recently due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic but members were still keen to help those that have been the worst affected and only those who had tested negative were allowed into the temple to prepare the food.

Residents and staff at YMCA, Peterborough Foyer, The New Haven and Fairview Court, all in the PE1 and PE2 postcode received a hand prepared meal consisting of Onion bhajis, rice, lentil dhal, along with some rice pudding.

This is part of the Gurdwara’s ongoing pledge to support the community during what is a tough time for so many, especially the homeless. They will be doing the same next week as well as further dates throughout 2020.

Jagdev Singh, President of the Gurdwara said: “We Sikhs want to live peacefully in our communities and show that we are equally as concerned with the challenges facing it as everybody else.

“We would like to thank Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, who have been supporting us in this project and helped make it possible.

“We wanted to do something for people that perhaps feel like the are being left behind or were suffering both physically and mentally. We want to foster some social cohesion and show that we are all in this together.”
