Dan Cumberworth and Darren Fox, owners of Elevate Fitness in Peterborough, have been volunteering to pack up ‘Care Packages’ consisting of over 20 items including food, drink and basic provisions, which will be delivered to all staff across the 32 care homes in the Country Court group.

A team of volunteers including Darren and Dan are spending several days sorting and packing over 2000 boxes which will be delivered directly to the care homes for staff to take home and share with their families.

Dan Cumberworth, joint owner of Elevate, said: “We only opened Elevate in January and had to close our doors due to the current crisis. We’ve been looking for something that we could do to help during this difficult time and to support carers and their families is massive, as they are so often the unsung heroes of situations like these. We were more than happy to do some volunteering for Country Court.

“We’ve spent the last two days making boxes, packing them and loading them up ready to be delivered all around the country to the care home staff! Fully PPE’d up, just over 1000 boxes made, 430 boxes filled and 20,000 steps in the bank too!”

Country Court CEO Alykhan Kachra said “We are very grateful to the guys at Elevate for lending some muscle to the packing and sorting operation. These are very challenging times for carers and staff in our care homes and we wanted to do something to say thanks. As soon as they heard what we were doing Darren and Dan offered to help as they know the pressures our staff are facing to keep our residents safe every single day. We hope that these Care Packages will go some way to making life a little bit easier for staff”.

The Country Court group operates 32 nursing and care homes which are working to support elderly people throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. The packages, which include items such as toilet roll, dried and tin goods and hand sanitiser, have been arranged courtesy of the Kachra family, owners of the Country Court group after seeing their staff struggle to get food and provisions after work.

Due to the recent lockdown, Elevate have had to adapt to conditions and are currently operating through online classes. These follow a similar structure to their usual classes and are available to everyone free of charge through their Facebook @elevatefitnessukgym and Instagram pages @elevate_fitness_uk.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: “Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role.”

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.

In addition, please write to your MP urging the Government to provide some additional financial support for local newspapers and their websites like this one and ensuring that supermarkets continue to stock them. I cannot stress enough how important such an intervention would be.

We thank all our readers and advertisers for their understanding and support - and we wish YOU all the best in the coming weeks. Keep safe, and follow the Government advice. Thank you.
