Katy Cunningham from Peterborough died after a fatal crash in Crowland on January 23 last year which also left her 11-year-old daughter Freya fighting for her life.

Freya’s younger brother, Zackeri (8) was also seriously injured, as was the driver of another car.

The driver, Adam White, was twice the drink-drive limit and speeding through traffic when he caused the fatal crash.

The 38-year-old of Acacia Avenue, Spalding, who had served prison time for drink-driving before causing the tragic crash - and was sentenced for drink-driving after doing it again afterwards - was given a nine year jail sentence in January after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was also banned from driving for 10 years.

Now, in memory of her friend and hairdresser, Vicky King (42) has shed her locks to raise money for charity.

Vicky said she could not bare to have anyone else cut her hair and that she “wanted to do something positive from an awful situation”.

She has so far raised more than £600 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service, although she is anticipating some funny looks from the public.

Vicky said: “I’m nervous as I think the worst thing is people judging, or how they will perceive me having no hair. If most people know why I was doing this I hope they’d understand and think it was a great thing.”

Despite having a short pixie cut since her teens, Vicky has embraced her new look. Using hair straighteners and new products, she has tried everything to encourage her hair to grow.

Now her hair has gone, it has been a shock to the system. She said: “I’m hoping it gets warmer soon, but summer is coming. I’ve considered buying a few wigs, even a mullet one for a bit of a laugh!”

Having had family members use the air ambulance in the past, Vicky had not realised it was not available around the clock. So she was determined to try and do her bit to change this, so more lives can be saved.
