Noticing the longer emergency response times, Phil was determined to help. After rigorous training he now volunteers his time but he still needs to fund his equipment which is currently on loan from the East Anglia Ambulance Service.

In a moment’s notice Phil has to be prepared to deal with any emergency. Covering Ramsey, Pondersbridge and the Fens, Phil has been called out multiple times in a day. Phil said: “I had three calls in one day: two which were in the early hours of the morning, so I jumped in my car attended the scene and then afterwards I went to work.”

Already making a huge difference in the community Phil has been hailed as a hero. He said: “People say that knowing I am there makes them feel better already. It’s amazing to go out and visit people and hear their problems and be able to do something about it. It’s all about giving back to the community and making a difference.”

Alex Laurent, Community Response Manager Cambridgeshire & Military Co-Response Lead said: "Community First Responders in our rural communities are a vital resource to the East of England Ambulance Service. They assist the ambulance service with patients that are acutely unwell and provide immediate clinical skills to support the patient in the community until and ambulance arrives. Ramsey and Chatteris is an area of development for our Community First Responders and we are looking to recruit in the area."

Though Phil is now a third of the way towards his £3500 goal, he urgently needs more funding, as he has recruited two more community first responders who will also need emergency kits. So Phil plans to take on another challenge, by running the Pathfinder March, a 46 mile run to help raise money not only for himself, but the two new volunteers.
