Peterborough Cathedral launches 'Big Give Christmas Challenge' to help support running costs

Peterborough Cathedral has launched a special matched fundraising campaign this Christmas.

From December 2-9, the Cathedral will be taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, which will see every gift made to the Cathedral will be matched by Peterborough Cathedral Development & Preservation Trust, at no extra cost.

The Cathedral needs over £2 million annually to stay open daily, offering a warm welcome, services, educational programmes for 7,000 children, community outreach, and a world-class choral education to local children. Your support ensures we can offer this and more to thousands of visitors.

Early in 2025, Peterborough Cathedral sent out an SOS message to the city, saying it was in ‘crisis’ due to financial pressures. In January, the team at the historic building launched an appeal to raise £300,000 by the end of March, in a bid to be able to stay open seven days a week, and continue to offer the services it currently does.

Given the success of the appeal, the Cathedral’s finances are in a healthier state – but the team have warned more work is still needed.

Due to the matched funding, the generosity of supporters will go twice as far for the next week.

Peterborough Cathedral has said: “Your support now will help make sure the Cathedral remains a place of welcome, worship and community, and that its history continues to touch lives for years to come.

“Thank you so much for being part of our story.”
