Peterborough-based Whirlpool cuts its general waste by 10 tonnes a month

A leading white goods maker in Peterborough has cut its general waste by 10 tonnes a month.

Whirlpool UK, in Morley Way, has managed to halve its waste over the course of a year with help from waste management specialists Axil Integrated Services of Corby.

The reduction in general waste has saved the company, which employs about 1,000 people in Peterborough, thousands of pounds.

Eco-friendly measures include the use of segregated bins to increase recycling andcutting plastic waste by 80 per cent, the implementation of a ‘clean as you go’ philosophy in the yard and the use of a new trailer system that can exchange four 1,100-litre bins at a time, saving time and increasing productivity.

In the canteen, single use cutlery has been replaced with biodegradable products.

Re-usable coffee cups and stainless steel water bottles have been introduced, which will remove more than 158,000 single-use coffee cups and 56,000 plastic bottles from Whirlpool’s canteens.

The concrete ballast used in washing machines is being recycled into aggregate.

Improvements have also been made to the premises with the removal of an old office and welfare unit to be replaced by new facilities.

“To achieve such healthy numbers in cutting waste is very positive and we look forward to reducing the company’s waste further and contributing to bettering our workplace environment, driving zero to landfill and ultimately making some headway in helping our planet.”
