Green light for £120,000 action to tackle speeding motorists on residential Peterborough road

Long-awaited action is to be taken to slow down speeding and dangerous motorists on a residential road in Peterborough.

The green light has been given to spend £120,000 on a series of safety measures to be implemented on the Dogsthorpe Road, Millfield.

The move comes after years of campaigning for action to improve safety on the much-used highway which has been the scene of dangerous and high speed driving.

Now Peterborough City Council has agreed to earmark a special budget targeted at safety works on the Dogsthorpe Road.

Among the measures that are expected to be included are speed cushions specially designed to slow drivers down plus an array of other actions

The move has been welcomed by Peterborough MP Andrew Pakes.

He said: “After years of talking about change the council has now agreed a budget to deal with dangerous driving and speeding around Dogsthorpe Road.

"Last week Cllr Angus Ellis and I brought residents together with the transport team at the council to look at options for traffic calming.

"I’d really like to thank councillors for working with residents to get the budget agreed. He added: “We have the budget, we now need to see the options, will look at speed cushions and other interventions to slow vehicles down, and put them to residents.

Mr Pakes said: “This is a top priority for the new financial year and the budget will be enough to get measures together for Dogsthorpe Road.”

Councillor Angus Ellis, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment said: "We have allocated £120,000 for traffic calming measures at various locations across the city including Dogsthorpe Road as part of our commitment to making our streets and our neighbourhoods safer for our residents."

Calls for action were intensified last month when police were alerted to a two-vehicle collision in which one had overturned.

It was just one in a number of incidents on the road.

In May 2025, a man suffered serious injuries in an incident on Elmfield Road – which leads off from Dogsthorpe Road – and the following month a car ploughed into a garden wall.
