The huge C17 military transport plane was being flown at the air base to allow crews to practice manoeuvres.

Officer Commanding Operations Wing at RAF Wittering, Wing Commander Nick Maxey said: “Because RAF Wittering has a spacious airfield with a long runway and wide taxiways, it is ideal for large aircraft to practice approaches, take-offs and landings during daylight and at night. RAF pilots and air traffic controllers have to maintain their currency, and the ability to land and take off under the cover of darkness is a real tactical advantage.”

The aircraft is from 99 Squadron, based at RAF Brize-Norton in Oxfordshire.

This week night flying has been taking place as part of training at RAF Wittering.
