Last week, the government announced that wedding ceremonies can take place from July 4 onwards in England for gatherings of up to 30 people.

City and county officials are aware that many are waiting to hear details of how the new arrangements for getting married or having a civil partnership will work and they have been contacting couples who had previously arranged ceremonies but had to postpone them under Covid-19 lockdown.

In Cambridgeshire, the county council registration services team is prioritising couples who were due to have their ceremony during lockdown, between March 24 and July 3. These couples have already been contacted via email.

In Peterborough, the team are contacting, in ceremony date order, those couples that need to give their notice of intention. They are also contacting couples with booked ceremonies to let them know what format their ceremony will take.

“Please bear with us at this exceptionally busy time,” say the city’s register office staff.

Both teams are awaiting further clarification of exact details on ceremonies from the government. They will be updating the websites with more information as they get it.

The government strongly advises that weddings only go ahead if they can be done in a ‘COVID-19 secure’ environment with preferably no more than 30 people attending a ceremony - and only if it can be safely done with social distancing. The number includes the couple, officiants, guests, photographers and caterers.

Venue managers would need to keep details of guests for test and trace systems.
