Aldi and Lidl are among those to have placed limits on the number of certain items customers can buy after products including toilet roll, hand wash, canned goods and pasta were sold out in city stores.

Supermarket bosses have pleaded with shoppers across the country to not stockpile and issued an open letter where they state: “There is enough for everyone if we all work together.”

However, several stores in Peterborough remain empty of some of the most in-demand items due to customers fearing that they may end up in isolation.

But in a sign that the major chains are attempting to curtail the stockpiling, signs have gone up in stores including Lidl and Aldi.

A sign at the entrance of Lidl in Lincoln Road, Werrington, states: “In light of the current situation we are restricting all products (excluding fruit and veg) to two per customer.

“Although this may be of an inconvenience as it does not fulfil their usual weekly shop, some haven’t been able to get theirs at all.

“Hopefully this won’t be the case for long.

“Thanks for your understanding.”

Aldi in Hampton has also put up a sign saying customers are restricted to four of each item.

Meanwhile, one customer at Aldi in Maskew Avenue has taken extreme measures when carrying out their food shop by walking around in a full body suit.

Public Health England said it does not recommend people wearing protecting masks or suits to tackle coronavirus.
