The underpasses, which were previously stained with racist slogans and imagery, have been transformed with murals promoting unity, community and love by a series of artists including Tony Nero, Charron Pugsley-Hill and Nath Murdoch.

Karima describes it as an ‘interesting fortnight’, as during the project the murals gained worldwide recognition for their positive message.

However, Karima was also faced with verbal abuse while she worked on her murals.

The team of artists who had been working in pairs sought more support when they found some youths in the area ‘particularly threatening’.

Karima, who said she had previously encountered similar issues when working as a youth worker in London, said: “The type of attitude is difficult as it is threatening people with bullying, belligerence and recklessness.”

Wanting to help, the local community has rallied to support Karima as she continues her murals which has helped her feel ‘hopeful’ about continuing her artworks.

Looking ahead, the community are planning a series of ‘picnics’ to help the artists and make the area feel safe and welcoming while they are working.

Karima said: “I’m really humbled by the response from the community.

“We want the incidences of racism to end, we hoped to show that there is a higher way in expression.

“I spoke with the young people regarding anti-social behaviour and they have improved but these young people need a supportive environment.”

Despite some negativity, dozens of passers-by have made positive comments with one saying: “I can’t believe how different it feels coming through here now.

“It actually puts a smile on my face knowing I’m coming this way.”

The charity is continuing to raise funds to continue further works to change the urban landscape.

Diaspora encourages residents to come and see the works taking place in small groups permitting social distancing.
