Cold storage firm to create 170 jobs in Peterborough as it builds regional superhub

The US headquartered Lineage Logistics is about to start work on the construction of the high tech superhub at Peterborough Gateway.

The hub will serve the temperature-controlled logistics provider’s retail and food service customers across the region.

The 35-metre tall expansion will contain cutting-edge automation and refrigeration technology and will be able to hold 92,000 pallets.

It will complement the existing factory, which can handle 26,000 pallets.

The expansion will allow the company to respond to growing customer demand online and through conventional grocery sales and which has accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mike McClendon, Lineage’s President of International Operations, said: “Our South Eastern Superhub is extremely well situated and in close proximity to major motorways that are key to the UK’s supply chain, strengthening our ability to efficiently connect customers with major food markets and population centre.

“We are also thrilled to offer a combination of automation and conventional racking upon completion, which will allow us to meet the diverse needs of both retail and foodservice sectors while also delivering energy efficient and cost-effective solutions for customers.”

The Peterborough development has been announced as Lineage, which acquired the Yearsley Group two years ago, nears completion of its 22,000-pallet-position Northern Superhub at Heywood, Greater Manchester.

Together, the superhubs will create more than 220 new jobs in the UK.

The company supports more than 2,000 regional, national and international customers across 14 facilities and employs more than 1,500 people in the UK.

The expansion in Peterborough will be another boost to the city’s employment offer.

Latest figures from the Department of Work and Pensions show the number of Universal Credit claimants rose by 606 in July to 23,593 - a rise of 2.6 per cent on the previous month.

But the situation has been eased by a spate of job creation announcements by employers in the city or moving to the city.

Supermarket operator Lidl has just opened its £70 million regional distribution hub at Peterborough creating 400 jobs while medical devices company Coloplast opened its £9 million distribution centre, also at Peterborough Gateway, with 340 staff, and fresh food supplier AMK Fresh has created 120 jobs with its new hub nearby. Global fashion chain URBN expects to create 200 jobs with its Euro distribution hub.
