Charity award for Sikh temple

Members of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Temple in Newark Road, Fengate, were presented with the volunteer award by national charity Epilepsy Action after raising £26,452 through an annual walk.

The walk has been taking place since 2003 and attracts up to 70 people every year, with people of all ages taking part from children to grandparents.

Accepting the award, Peterborough Anglian Sikh Association chairman Ram Singh Kalra said: “As a Sikh community we get a lot of pleasure out of helping others in need – regardless of their race, religion or background.

“It makes us very happy and gives us satisfaction that we have done something positive with our life in this world.”

Epilepsy is a condition which affects the brain.

In the UK, one out of 100 people have epilepsy, and half of those will have seizures.

Roger Stimson, spokesman for Epilepsy Action’s Peterborough branch, said: “The Peterborough Anglian Sikh Association community has shown commendable determination and compassion in raising a fantastic amount for the 600,000 people in the UK with epilepsy, 6,100 of these who live in Cambridgeshire.

“Their dedication and long-standing support have helped us to continue to deliver vital services to people with epilepsy when they need it most, from our helpline to regional coffee and chat groups.”
