Bosses of Leeds Building Society vow to stay open in Peterborough to at least 2031
Bosses of a building society have pledged to remain open in Peterborough for the next five years.
The promise to remain until at least September 2031 has been made by officials of the Leeds Building Society, which has premises in Queen Street.
They also say the branch will be open to customers every weekday from 9.30am to 4.45pm with no appointments needed
The pledge comes as the number of empty units in the city has grown and as a number of banks have withdrawn from the high street as they move business online

A spokesperson for the Leeds Building Society said the branch will stay open until at least September 2031.
Graham Binns, head of Leeds Building Society’s branch network, said: "We know that for many people in Peterborough having access to a local branch still matters.
"Whether it's opening a savings account, getting help to protect themselves from fraud, or simply speaking to someone face-to-face, our branches provide a service that many members value.
"That's why we're making a clear commitment that our Peterborough branch will remain open until at least September 2031.
"Alongside that, we're making a series of wider promises that reward loyalty, provide greater certainty and ensure members can continue to access our services in the way that suits them best."
As part of its announcement, Leeds Building Society has also promised that customers will always be able to speak to someone, either by visiting the Society’s branches or calling to discuss and that it will not offer any savings accounts that are only for new customers.
A spokesperson said that the society’s data showed that branches continue to play an important role for members of all ages and that 29 per cent of savings accounts opened in the last year were opened in a branch with one in 10 branch users being aged 30 or under.
The announcement comes after it was revealed that Peterborough Post Office in Bridge Street will shut with the closure of the retailer TG Jones. The Home Sweet Home furniture shop in the Rivergate Shopping Centre closed recently and there are empty units in Bridge Street where Peacocks and TK Maxx were once based.
