Like all cities, Peterborough is ever changing.
Iconic buildings and shops that existed as recently as 10 years ago - such as TK Maxx in the city centre - are now consigned to history.
The changing face of Peterborough may not appease all locals, but the city continues to evolve in more ways than one.
But what does the future of Peterborough look like, and what changes could happen over the next decade?
A number of major infrastructure projects are planned for the coming years, including the city’s new indoor swimming pool and Hilton Garden Inn at Fletton Quays.
We’ve taken a look at six important new developments set to change the face of Peterborough by 2036.
Discover them below:

2. Indoor swimming pool
The 25 metre indoor pool and sports centre, which has been partly funded by the government and is expected to open in 2028, was originally earmarked for the site of the former Regional Pool off Bishop’s Road. But a different location has now been chosen, although Peterborough City Council has not shared this publicly. If the full £36.5 million cost of the project can be secured, construction work will start in early 2027, with completion in 2028. Photo: PT

3. Hilton Garden Inn at Fletton Quays
Work on the 160-bedroom Hilton Garden Inn in Peterborough city centre stopped in March 2023. The council is the primary secured creditor on the building after its decision in 2017 to lend the developer £15 million to kickstart building work. As of April 2026, a number of bidders have been vying to snap up the unfinished structure. A date for its intended completion has not been confirmed. Photo: PT

4. Whitworth Mill
Work to transform the 19th century Whitworth Mill into a total of 62 flats started last November. The development will have 18 flats above commercial units, plus an additional 44 along the river's edge. Plans were approved in February 2024 after the mill was demolished in 2020. Photo: CEEGI
