250 jobs to be created as National Gas reveals multi-million pound investment in Peterborough
More than 200 jobs are to be created with a multi-million pound investment in Peterborough by National Gas.
Bosses of National Gas today (January 8) unveiled an £870 million investment plan that will see the creation of a new regional headquarters in Peterborough.
The investment will be divided up across the East of England over the next five years and is expected to help create 250 new jobs as well as safeguarding 300 existing jobs.
The announcement was made jointly by Nick Sides, the regional director for National Gas, and Chris McDonald MP, the Minister for Industry in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Department for Business and Trade, at a presentation at the Peterborough Compressor Station in Gas Works Road.

The new headquarters will serve as the central operational hub for National Gas’s activities in the East of England, which includes Cambridgeshire, Essex, Kent, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire and Suffolk.
The new funding will support critical infrastructure projects in East England and will include updating the control systems at Kings Lynn and Diss’ compressor stations.
Last April, National Gas announced a multi-million pound investment to upgrade and install new vital gas compressors at Peterborough’s National Gas Compressor Station in a move that created 100 jobs.
The new equipment is specifically designed to be hydrogen-ready to ensure the nation’s energy infrastructure is ready for the transition to low-carbon gases.
National Gas says its projects will involve local contractors, which will help to boost employment opportunities and drive growth in the area.
Thirty-five per cent of Britain’s gas is transported through the East region’s gas network and a third of Britain’s gas supply enters the country from the southern North Sea at National Gas’ largest site, Bacton in Norfolk.
A spokesperson said: “National Gas is also proud to lead the way in transforming the energy network for a net zero future.
"Gas provides the energy security to support renewable electricity generation, and we are developing our infrastructure to transport hydrogen and carbon dioxide across the country.”
