Now that Ireland have been granted Test match status perhaps Eoin Morgan should go back and play for them in international cricket.

His failure to sing our national anthem suggests he’s far more Irish than English.

His failure to travel to Bangladesh last winter suggests he’ll only play for England at his own convenience.

I’m not getting all the love for Morgan and his captaincy anyway. He’s been great at winning some pointless series, but failed when a trophy of significance was on the line.

SILLY SEASON IS ALWAYS WELCOME

I love the silly season in football. Most transfer rumours are ridiculous, but great fun.

I returned from a fortnight’s holiday to hear a suggestion that Manchester City had signed a goalkeeper, Ederson, I’d never heard of for £35 million.

I then heard Posh flop Paul Taylor had signed for a better League One team in losing play-off finalists Bradford City. They both turned out to be strange, but true. It sure is a funny old game.

Goalkeeper is a key position for sure - I reckon Posh would have finished in the bottom half of the League One table last season with Ben Alnwick rather than Luke McGee in the team - but few fans flock to grounds to see number ones in action so £35 million is a crazy fee, especially for an untested 23 year-old.

TYPICAL BOOTHROYD TEAM

It was a shame for England U21s that a German reserve team were too strong in their European Championship semi-final, but let’s not get carried away with a decent run to the last four. England relied on set-pieces to look dangerous and hoofed possession away far too often. Not an unusual occurence for an Aidy Boothroyd team.
