Letter: Peterborough’s cycle routes need improving

My view on the city’s transport system (Peterborough Telegraph, 11th June, page 21) is that one major issue is the cycling network. It needs significant improvement.

Many cycle routes need repair. Those on the former Development Corporation estates often have been damaged by tree roots. Don’t remove the trees but do resurface the paths.

Those on roads, such as Oundle Road, and on some industrial estates, have been damaged by vehicles and need patching. Some of the white cycle marking need repainting. The authorities should have a specific budget aimed at keeping all cycle routes in a good state of repair.

Some routes into and through town lack enough cycle paths. Better signage might be needed to direct cyclists off very busy vehicle routes on to nearby routes as long as they too are made cyclist friendly.

The city centre does not have a good route for cyclists passing through it. If it did, we wouldn’t see people cycling along Bridge Street when they shouldn’t.

Closing off pedestrian access through St.Peter’s Arcade means that I can no longer reduce the time I spend on foot by cycling along the road behind the town hall. The alternative Wentworth Street option means navigating bus queues on Bourges Boulevard, and then being faced with a one-away system.

More people are cycling than ever before, because of the lockdown, and we need an integrated transport system that sustains and encourages this move.
