Letter: Clear fly-tipped bushes don’t rip them up

We’ve been contacted by a resident of Orton Waterville ward who is alarmed by Peterborough MP Paul Bristow’s comments in an article in last week’s PT (‘Residents are fed up with drug deals and fly-tipping’).

In response to the problem of drug use and fly-tipping in the city, Mr Bristow said: “Get rid of overgrown bushes and vegetation.”

Our resident is concerned – as are we – that the needs of local wildlife are considered. While it is important to ensure that bushes are free from discarded syringes and litter, we would not wish for the council to remove the bushes altogether, as they provide essential habitat for our wildlife, including hedgehogs. What the city needs, what it’s crying out for, is more hedgerow that is maintained with natural habitats in mind.
