Peterborough will come together once more on Remembrance Sunday

The courage of those who face danger to protect us has weighed on my mind this week following the horrific train attack and Remembrance Sunday, writes Peterborough MP Andrew Pakes.

The terrible attack last Saturday evening has affected so many people. No-one turns up for work or boards a train expecting to experience horror like this.

I’d like to pay tribute to LNER staff, the police and first responders, as well as passengers who took action to support each other. In particular, our city will remember the extraordinary bravery of one LNER staff member who risked his life in the defence of others and remains in critical condition. His actions, as witnessed by police on CCTV, were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved lives.

I would also like to acknowledge train driver Andrew Johnson, a Royal Navy veteran, whose quick and decisive action enabled the train to be safely diverted, allowing emergency services to respond.

We all hear talk of patriotism, but there is surely no greater act of patriotism or simple humanity, than putting your life at risk to protect others.

My thoughts remain with those brave individuals, and everyone affected by this traumatic incident, as well as their families. While questions remain to be answered, I am grateful for the swift response of our emergency services and for the extra police visibility in Peterborough since the incident.

At times like this, we are reminded of the debt of gratitude we owe not only to those serving in our community but across our country as well. It is especially poignant that we approach Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday against the backdrop of such tragedy. These occasions give us space to reflect on the service and sacrifice of all those who have protected our freedoms and way of life.

As ever, Peterborough will come together on Remembrance Sunday to honour those who have served, with commemorations at the War Memorial and through the poppies worn on our lapels. It will be a privilege to once again join civic ceremonies in Peterborough this coming Sunday, and to wear my poppy with pride on behalf of our city.

Over the last year, I have been lucky enough to see some of the work of our servicemen and women up close through the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme. I had the privilege of meeting the Gurkhas in Aldershot to learn more about their operational roles, it made me proud to see their dedication as well as the Perkins engines in their vehicles still going strong.

This time of year, is about honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. In the wake of this week’s events, let us also remember the courage, compassion, and resilience on display closer to home. Together, let’s stand with the victims and their loved ones, support those who serve, and take heart from the quiet heroism across our city. That is how we honour those who protect our way of life, by protecting and supporting each other, especially when it matters most.
