All of us are struggling to cope in one way or another, with the uncertain times that COVID-19 has brought upon us, writes Cats protection Peterborough spokeswoman Sheridan Gaunt. A

As a voluntary run branch of Cats Protection, we have certainly felt the effect of being ‘on pause’ and our usual ways of operating has certainly changed.

All animal charities have seen a marked increase in the volume of abandoned cats and kittens needing help, but we are also experiencing a significant increase in people wanting to rehome their cats, due to the uncertainty of their own financial future.

Neutering costs between £35 -£80, add into the mix that many veterinary practices are still only offering reduced services, we knew we needed to step in and help prevent a kitten crisis. Now that’s not an easy task with all fundraising events being cancelled, all cat adoptions on pause, thus resulting in a massive drop in our income.

Through the Empower, Pledge, Donate campaign at the BGL group, we have been very fortunate to receive a donation of funds. We have been able to now match these funds, making it possible to help people struggling in the community, that wouldn’t normally qualify for any financial assistance for neutering.

Our Covid-19 Neuter Offer is open to key workers, furloughed staff, people that have had their working hours reduced and those people that are facing redundancy.

If you fall into any of these categories, you can apply for one of our 200 full cost neuter vouchers we have available. The other criteria are that your cat must be aged 16 weeks and over and that you live in the PE1-PE8 postcode area.

There are so many benefits to neutering your cat. As well as avoiding pregnancy, neutering your cat can be good for their overall health. For example: for female cats, the chance of getting some infectious diseases will be reduced and the likelihood of developing tumours, womb infections and other illnesses is also reduced.

Neutered male cats are less likely to end up injured from fighting or stray from home.

We only have funds available for 200 full cost vouchers, so you will need to be quick in applying!
