Officers set off on charity mission for police families who lost loved ones

Six officers from Cambridgeshire Constabulary set off on a three day cycle ride to raise funds for the families of police officers who have lost their lives on duty.

Deputy Chief Constable Alan Baldwin, Detective Inspector Jenny Bristow, Detective Sergeant Stephanie Calne, Inspector Jayne Drury, PC Martin Drury and Special Constable James Keith left the police headquarters in Huntingdon this morning (July 29) on the three day UK Police Unity Tour.

The journey will finish at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire where officers from across the county will lay wreaths in remembrance of fallen colleagues.

Each member of the team is riding in memory of a specific officer from Cambridgeshire and raising money for the Care of Police Survivors (COPS) which aims to help officers’ families rebuild their lives.

DCC Baldwin said: “This challenge is all in aid of a charity close to our hearts and we are dedicated to supporting the cause and representing the force and our fallen officers at the national memorial service.

“Policing is at times a dangerous profession and we are so very grateful for what COPS do to help those left behind.

“This national ride which will involve hundreds of officers and staff is to help those who help ours.”

SC Keith will be riding in memory of Special Constabulary Commandant Reginald Nicholson who died aged 68 alongside Chief Constable Edwards on November 15, 1945. They were travelling together to a Special Constabulary Conference when they were sadly involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle in Melbourn.

Insp Jayne Drury will cycle in memory of PC Anthony Allder who died on January 19, 1966 aged 39 following a collision with a car whilst on bicycle patrol on his beat in Gamlingay.

PC Martin Drury will ride for Traffic Officer PC Andreas Newbery, aged 34, who was killed whilst closing the inside lane of the A1(M) on February 5, 2003 to protect vehicles involved in an earlier incident.

Det Sgt Calne will cycle for DC Sharon Garrett who died on her way home from work following a road traffic collision on the A141 at Wyton on June 6, 2014.

DI Bristow is cycling in memory of PC Karen Paterson, who died on her way to work on January 6, 2012.

DCC Baldwin will ride in memory of DS Francis Willis who was killed whilst saving an innocent man on June 3, 1930. He threw himself in front of a tutor at Cambridge University and was shot at close range.
