New nursery means new jobs for Crowland

Northolme in Postland Road, Crowland, can now be turned into a nursery catering for nearly 30 children at each of its five-day, 15-hour weekly sessions in the town after consent from South Holland District Council at a meeting on Tuesday.

In a letter to the council, applicants Mr and Mrs M. Genever, of Market Deeping, said: “With an ever-growing population and an increase in new housing, the feedback we have received from local parents is that a new, first class childcare facility is greatly needed within the Crowland area.

“We propose to convert the property (Northolme) into a children’s day nursery facility for the local community as we feel that the building’s flexible layout and the space available lends itself perfectly to this type of facility.

“The nursery would be able to offer new jobs for local, experienced people and we propose, based on the number of children, that five to seven job opportunities would become available.”

The proposed nursery did raise concerns with Crowland Parish Council whose members warned that it could lead to “possible traffic issues on an already busy corner.”

A statement from the parish council to South Holland District Council said: “Whilst we welcome a business creating local employment, we are sad to see the loss of another family home.

But a report for the district council’s planning committee said: “The proposed children’s day nursery appears appropriate to this location because the benefits of addressing the need for childcare provision would outweight the loss of a single family home.”
