Man pulled over on Bourges Boulevard in Peterborough more than 100 times over drug drive limit

Gintars Garkajs, 30, was stopped in his Audi A6 by police on Bourges Boulevard on January 10. A roadside drug wipe indicated the presence of cocaine in his system and he was arrested.

Further tests showed he was 100 times over the limit for MDMA as well as being more than 10 times over set limits for cocaine and benzoylecgonine. Amphetamine was also found in his system.

Garkajs, of Earl Street in Wisbech, appeared at Cambridge Magistrates Court on April 1 and pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of drugs. He was jailed for 18 weeks and banned from driving for five years.

Officers from the road policing unit conducted a campaign to combat the issue in March, with supporting communications for a two-month period. During March officers conducted 29 roadside drug tests in Cambridgeshire, with 18 motorists testing positive.

Sergeant Ian Manley said: “Driving under the influence of drugs is completely unacceptable. By doing so you significantly increase the chance of being involved in a serious, even fatal collision. It’s simple, if you’ve consumed drugs, don’t risk driving.”

Drug drive limits are set very low for illegal substances and there are also designated levels for some prescription medications. Roadside drug testing kits can now detect the presence of cocaine and cannabis in someone’s system.
