Man appears in court charged with Haverhill thefts

A 26-year-old man has appeared at court this morning charged with the theft of a Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal collection box and the theft of a handbag from separate premises in Haverhill.

Benjamin Morton, of Tyrells, Hockley, Essex, was arrested yesterday, Thursday March 10, on suspicion of theft

He was interviewed by officers in connection with the theft of the Poppy Appeal charity box from a pub in Haverhill High Street on February 18 and with the theft of the handbag and its contents, including an iPhone 6, from a bar in the town in the early hours of November 15 last year.

He was subsequently charged with four counts – the two thefts, dishonestly receiving stolen goods – a Bose speaker – in October 2015 and committing fraud by false representation – relating to selling the speaker – in the same month.

He appeared before Bury St Edmunds magistrates this morning, Friday March 11, and has now been remanded in custody until his next hearing at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Thursday March 17.
