Life-saving sisters help RSPCA release baby vole back into the wild

Megan Hayes, 13 and her sister Daisy, nine, found an underweight, vulnerable baby vole, which they called Alex, on their way home from school on July 11 2016.

They decided to take it home and call the RSPCA which has spent almost three weeks caring for Alex until he was well enough to be released.

Megan and Daisy attended the release and saw Alex run back into the wild.

Alison Charles, manager at East Winch Wildlife Centre where Alex recuperated, said: “The girls decided to call the vole Alex and very kindly send in a donation to cover the cost of his care, which was really sweet.

“So it was only right that they - the people who undoubtedly saved his little life - got to see him released back into the wild.”

Megan and Daisy’s mum, Paula, said: “Alex was very wet and bedraggled when we found him.

“We called the local vet and they told us to get in touch with the RSPCA.

“It was fantastic for the girls to be able to see him released into the wild.”
